Art Briles doesnt know how to appear sorry about B
After watching Tom Rinaldis interview with Art Briles on ESPN's "College GameDay" Saturday, you have to ask one question:Is Briles really sorry?Or he is simply putting the PR spin out there so he can get another coaching job in the aftermath of one of the worst scandals in recent memory? Make no mistake; his name will come up. "GameDay" host Rece Davis kind of answered that question for us after the interview aired.MORE: Everybody deserves forgivene s but in my judgment, when you are in charge you forfeit your right to be the leader of a college football program when things like this happen under your watch,"Davis said on the telecast. "I would not hire him again."We could stop there. Thats perfect.Everybody deserves the chance to be forgiven, and "GameDay" afforded that to Briles. Rinaldi asked tough questions.
Adrian Gonzalez Jersey What would you say to the victims?"I'd tell them I'm extremely sorry, Briles said. My heart aches, and we probably have a good cry se sion, then a good talk se sion and a good hug se sion. It's just appalls
David Wright Jersey me that somebody could victimize another human being, and there's no place in society for it. I'd never condone it, and I never will." Thats the problem. That se sion likely will never come. The damage is still fresh. The damage cant be done with one meeting.Yet Briles is out there, while the facele s victims in this scandal always are lost or forgotten, are picking up the pieces. This scandal led to the dismi sal of Briles along with the removal of university president Kenneth Starr and the resignation of Ian McCaw. We have those names and know the impact.MORE: Allowing Briles another chance to coach this close to the scandal affords no consideration to the victims. Briles said he felt responsible for what happenedbut kind of gave the half-and-half answer that also wasnt enough."I would hope they could get past that and see that each individual is responsible for their own actions, he said. It was not a reflection of anything that I felt."Baylor is still feeling that now, and its been a struggle to move on. Briles fingerprints are still on the Baylor football program all of the a sistants are there with interim coach Jim Grobe and the university has a long road to go in that regard.Yet Briles still has supporters at Baylor, which would be impo sible to understand if the same thing didnt happen at so many other schools hit by scandals. He went 65-37 over the last eight seasons on the field. Yet the mishandling of sexual a saults and the scandal that followed put
Dwight Gooden Jersey a price on that succe s.Does Briles think he did enough?"I think we did the best we could at that time, and no, I could've done more, Briles said.IN-DEPTH: That sounds way too much like what Joe Paterno said at the end of his tenure at Penn State. The scandal isnt entirely Briles fault, but find a succe sful FBS coach that doesnt know every detail of their program.Thats why its hard to afford Briles that chance.Paterno never coached again. Neither Ron Meyer nor Bobby Collins ever coached college football after SMU was given the death penalty. On a lower level of scandal, Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly high-tailed for the NFL. Yet if they really wanted to come to the FBS, just about any of the 128 schools in the FBS would take them in.This scandal is different because a school will go through the rationalizing proce s to bring Briles in. Baylor averaged 52.4 points per game this decade heading into this season, the most of any FBS school in that stretch. That system wins football games. It was good enough to
Matt Harvey Jersey have .Its too early to speculate who, but theres no doubt a program will come calling at the end of this season. The only question is whether
New York Mets Jersey its as an offensive coordinator, a Group of 5 head coach or gasp a Power 5 school. Dont be surprised if its the last option, but lets hope doesnt come to that.Thats when the real questions will begin. Will all those a sistants follow him? Why wasnt he given the show-cause penalty? How could a school do that?MORE: Davis answered those questions. In time, we can forgive Briles, and maybe that could lead to an a sistant coaching job. Maybe. If Saturdays interview proved anything, then its theres a long way to go before we get there."I lost some of my soul, quite honestly, Briles told Rinaldi and nearly teared up.Briles appears to be sorry, but that doesnt mean he should get that head coaching job.Like Davis said, thatright has been forfeited.
