Normal transformer oil is transparent in appearance, free from suspended matter, sediment and mechanical impurities.
What is the main function of transformer oil?

(1) It has an insulating effect. The dielectric strength of transformer oil is higher than that of air. The insulating material is immersed in the transformer oil, which can improve the dielectric strength and avoid the erosion of moisture.

(2) It has a heat dissipation effect. Transformer oil has a large specific heat and is often used as a coolant. The heat generated by the operation of the transformer will cause the oil near the core and winding to expand and rise. Through the upper and lower convection of the oil, the heat is dissipated through the radiator to ensure the normal operation of the transformer.

(3) It has the function of arc suppression. On the on-load tap changer of oil circuit breakers and transformers, arcing occurs when the contacts are switched. Because the transformer oil has good thermal conductivity, and under the high temperature of the arc, it can touch a large amount of gas and generate a large pressure, thereby improving the arc extinguishing performance of the medium, and the arc can be quickly extinguished.
