If an Englishman goes to, say, the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, he is likely to be offered at least ten books on the subject of the history of Ottoman Turkey that are plainly called "The History of Ottoman Turkey."Yet if he visits any specialty bookshop in London or New York and asks for a history book about Turkey during this period, he may well be shown only one title. That one would most likely have appeared over twenty years ago. It might even have been edited by a professional historian. A recent paper in the prestigious Journal of Social History suggests that most readers find books on modern topics boring or irrelevant because they are not connected with their lives. Hence, their attitude towards historical writing is one of indifference at best.They are unaware that millions have died in the 20th century alone as a result of an ignorant or hostile attitude towards history. This warlike view has now extended to the study of modern history itself. No serious student of modern history can avoid being concerned by its attitude to the past, which is far out-dating all his own interests.As well as being seen as dull and remote, history is also regarded as irrelevant by many people connected with it. It may be dismissed as a wasted art form. If it is to be preserved, this must be by some means. Moreover it cannot be done without the help of readers. Modern history, in any pure or formal sense, has no readers until today historians who connect their subject with contemporary life in some way produce texts that are read in the same way they themselves are read.A formal statement of their existence can only be made at the end of this period when Readers will have learned what you have just learned about history and how it is written.The study of history implies a certain amount of specialization; but there are also many inter-connections between different historical disciplines which make the study of any single field an important part of the whole. Some historians are concerned with culture, others with economics, law, religion, war, etc., etc. However the study of history involves all these different aspects in one way or another.The study of history has always been a popular subject supported by an ever-increasing number of people who can afford to take it up. It is part of the general movement towards unity in the sciences which has characterized modern times. Therefore, any attacks on history must concern themselves with its structure rather than its content. If this is achieved–and it can be done–the study of history will be enriched by new developments. Some of the reasons why a lack of knowledge about the work of historians is not necessarily a disadvantage are as follows:

It can be said without fear of contradiction that until quite recently there was not one standard textbook on the political history of Turkey during the First World War. A recent article in "The International History Review" cited this as an example to be avoided by students who wished to write their own textbooks on modern history. The most recent works on Ottoman history, including one with its own political agenda, have used them as examples to follow. It is hoped that the authors will take notice and revise their own works accordingly.
