Square Enix's HD-2D games have been receiving a lot of praise and interest from gamers. Titles like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy have really captured the attention of nostalgic gamers partially due to their unique art style.

In a recent interview conducted by 4Gamer (translated in the form of Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano talked about the aesthetic of the graphics and how it's currently being implemented in the next games for the company. When the interviewer expressed dismay by the fact that more indie games hadn't been able to replicate the style, Asano revealed the reason the reason is because it's expensive!

"It's most likely worth noting that it's priced higher than you'd imagine. In that respect, it's an excellent match for the games that people want from Square Enix. There's not much to gain by other companies copying the style," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately, that cost isn't stopping Square Enix from releasing more games in this fashion.

The remake version of Live a Live is set to be exclusive to Nintendo Switch in July, while a remake for Dragon Quest III is currently in development. There are several other games that could benefit from the style, and it will be fascinating to see exactly what Square Enix does with HD-2D next. While the company has clearly invested in this graphic style, Asano went on to declare that there isn't a currently a "definitive guideline," and it will continue to buy D2R Ladder Items evolve from game to game.
