Avatar 2 now has an official title – Avatar: The Way of Water – and we've also got our first look at the long-delayed sequel.The teaser trailer was debuted at CinemaCon on April 27, 2022 where the title was also revealed, and it was released online on May 9. It's light on actual plot details but does serve as an effective setup to show off the lush environments that James Cameron has been working hard to perfect over the past decade.
An inside look at the making of Avatar 2
Filming began in late 2021 and reportedly wrapped in August 2022. Filming took place mainly on an island off mainland Fiji, but also shot for an entire month on a marine ship in international waters of Polynesia. The use of motion capture technology was expanded for Avatar 2, with new capabilities allowing for underwater motion capture for its water scenes (and eventually led to James Cameron's vision being fulfilled).
James Cameron Talks About Avatar 2
Director James Cameron took to CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 27, 2022 to unveil some new footage from his upcoming Avatar sequel and confirm one of its rumored titles. The follow-up to 2009's record-breaking blockbuster has been in development for nearly a decade; original star Sam Worthington confirmed that cameras finally began rolling on April 21, 2022.
Cast updates
In addition to star Sam Worthington, director James Cameron has announced that returning cast members Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang will be joined by Cliff Curtis and Oona Chaplin. Newcomers include Kae Alexander, David Ajala and Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Grace Park.
Title Revealed
James Cameron revealed that the new title for Avatar 2 is Avatar: The Way of Water. Although no plot details have been revealed, we do know that Sigourney Weaver and Sam Worthington will reprise their roles from 2009's Avatar. Weaver also plays Grace Augustine in James Cameron's other blockbuster sci-fi franchise, Alien, although it's unclear whether she'll appear in either of those movies.
When Will Avatar 2 Come Out?
The first Avatar premiered in 2009, with James Cameron announcing soon after that he’d write and produce sequels to follow it up. The original Avatar cost $237 million to make and wound up raking in more than $2.7 billion worldwide, making it one of only seven films to gross more than $2 billion. It remains Cameron’s highest-grossing film ever.
