Anarkali is a 2015 comedy-drama film written and directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery starring Dulquer Salmaan, Samvrutha Sunil and Monalisa. It's about a young couple who live in the slums of an unnamed Indian city. A series of events brings them to the attention of a corrupt solider and his mentally unstable sister, who use the couple to extort money from their families and send them on impossible missions with lethal consequences if they fail.This satirical social commentary on capital punishment has been received with both praise and criticism. The film won the National Award for Best Film on Social Issues, the NETPAC Award for best Asian film at the 21st International Film Festival of India, and four Kerala State Film Awards.The story is set in an unnamed Indian city. The protagonist, Anwar Ali (Dulquer Salmaan), is a young man who works as a porter at a railway station. He lives with his wife Aysha (Monalisa), son Danny (Varun Situmol) and daughter Shania, in a slum near the railway station that they call home.Anwar considers himself lucky to have found Aysha as she accepts him despite his porter profession which he inherited from his father. For Anwar, Aysha is the ideal woman who would do anything for her family.Anwar has an enemy in the form of Kunjappan (Mammootty), who is a corrupt Sub-inspector at the police station. Kunjappan rules the area with an iron hand. He terrorises everyone, especially those who are poor and helpless, including his younger sister Namitha (Samvrutha). His niece, Parvathi (Monalisa), is in love with Anwar and keeps pestering him to marry her. She thinks that marriage will help Anwar escape from abject poverty which has been his fate for as long as he can remember. Anwar has two friends, Kiran (Samuthirakani) and Mohammed (Aju Varghese). The three of them are part of a group of porters who work at a railway station. Anwar is a hard-working man who goes to work even on his days off. He does not take much care of his family as he believes that they have already suffered enough at the hands of Kunjappan. Kunjappan has a sister Namitha, who is mentally unstable and addicted to alcohol. She dislikes Anwar but, to her surprise, secretly loves him as he is not part of Kunjappan's family circle despite being from the same slum. Through a series of events Namitha realises that Anwar is in love with her and wants to marry her.Desperate to advance his career, Anwar asks Kunjappan for a job. He pleads with Kunjappan that as he works as a porter he is not much use to his family as the family comes from a better slum. Anwar's plea wins over Kunjappan, who agrees to take him on as an assistant sub-inspector in charge of Munroe police station. After several days of working for the police station, one night Kunjappan tells Anwar to go home so that he can have some rest after being busy all day.
