The company has filed two OSRS gold trademarks in the UK, one that reads "OSRS Gold" and the second with the title "RS Gold" and stating that the company has registered trademarks that use the words as words. This should stop third-party sites from being able to make claims that they sell RS Gold.

A quick Google search of either term results in hundreds of websites several of them having one of the terms in their URL, offering currencies in RuneScape as a substitute for real money. It was announced on October 13 that Jagex is putting an end for "real-world trade". In a blog post on its blog "The RuneScape Team" clarified that "gold purchased through RWT real-world trading can be a problem in any online game with a tradeable currency."

Jagex says it will be sending "messages to players that we've identified who are involved to engage in"RWT" within "the next few hours". "For those who were involved, we want to be clear - this is the one or only warning" Jagex added.

It was also announced of the game's PvP modes, Duel Arena, would undergo sweeping changes, including more stringent enforcement of game's code for conduct for the purpose of encouraging more positive game play. Jagex affirms that the feature "has been a source of anger for the shady behavior".

Before that, however the publisher's "short-term measures" are in place "until our teams of developers are able to deliver a major update that fully replaces Duel Arena in the next year."

RuneScape hasn't survived for more than 20 years because it's an average game that does not have any commitments in the long term. As an MMORPG it's a part of a genre that seems constantly be in danger of disappearing despite the popularity of a select group of games.
